Sir Alex Ferguson defends Arsene Wenger as United prepare to battle Arsenal – English Premier League
Sir Alex Ferguson has branded the speculation surrounding Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal as ridiculous as the English Premier League season gets into its full flow. Arsene Wenger has come under tremendous pressure at the Emirates stadium to turn the Gunners fortunes around as it has been six years since the London club won any silverware. Arsenal made it to the Carling Cup final last year but shot themselves in the foot and self destructed courtesy of their inexperienced defence when Birmingham City grabbed two late goals to seal a 2-1 win over the Gunners.
Arsene Wenger was held as the responsible party back then and now due to his refusal to spend big in the summer transfer window, the Frenchman is now under calls from the fans at Arsenal to produce results. Arsenal have already parted ways with three of their first team stars in the summer transfer window. Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy have been sold to Manchester City already whilst Cesc Fabregas has been shipped off to Barcelona.
Last season, Arsenal were seen as title contenders but then faded away near the end of the English Premier League season as their squad was thinned down due to injuries. Arsenal will find it hard to make it to a top four finish this season and if they fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, then things are bound to get tough at the Emirates stadium for the players as well as their mentor, Arsene Wenger. Wenger has been responsible for establishing Arsenal as a force in the English Premier League but the Frenchman’s transfer window policy has been a reason for Arsenal’s failure over the past five to six years.
Now as Arsenal prepare to face off against Manchester United in their third English Premier League fixture of their season. United will give Arsenal a stern test but it remains to be seen which team will come out on top. Ferguson has defended his counterpart ahead of Arsenal’s match against Manchester United as he stated, “It's a crazy world we're in. It's a critical world and you only need to lose a couple of games to have critics howling down at you. All the talk is about Arsenal and Arsene leaving. But who can replace him? It's the most ridiculous situation.”
The Manchester United manager said, “The man has been simply unbelievable. He has given Arsenal platforms they never thought they'd get to. He should carry on. He shouldn't listen to the critics. The one thing you need in this game is ear plugs."
