About Manchester City Football Club:

Manchester City are one of two major football clubs from the city of Manchester. The club have enjoyed periods of success throughout their history with the late 1960’s and early 1970’s being regarded as their golden era when they enjoyed their greatest victories.

In recent years the club have struggled to impose any dominance in the top flight of English football and have not lifted a major honour since 1976. A sharp decline in the clubs fortunes during the 1990′s led to the club being relegated twice in the space of three years. The club had seemingly hit rock bottom and were doomed to a long spell in the footballing wilderness. However despite these set backs and with a faithful support, Manchester City have regained a sense of pride and have become a permanent fixture in the Premiership.

Manchester City secured their first honours back in 1899 when the club lifted the second division title which lead onto an FA Cup win. In 1937 the City won the First Division title for the first time in the club’s history but then hit a low point by being relegated the following season. The next major honour for the club was securing the FA Cup in 1956 beating Birmingham City 3–1 in one of the most famous finals of all time, well remembered for City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann finishing the match despite having unknowingly broken his neck during the game.

The club’s golden era of success began with City lifting the league title in the 1967-68 season. This was then followed by the FA Cup in 1969, the European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1970 and the League Cup in 1970. The final trophy of the greatest era in Manchester City’s history was the League Cup in 1976 when the club beat Newcastle United in the final.

A long period of decline was destined for the club reaching the lowest point when the team suffered relegation to division one in 1996 and then a mere two seasons later again suffered relegation only this time to the second division.

Since these dark days Manchester City have returned to the Premiership but have struggled to find form which can secure trophies and major honours. Disciplinary problems have recently weighed heavily on the club and this factor together with lacklustre performances culminated in the termination of manager Stuart Pearce’s contract with the club.

Despite having a distinct lack of successes on the pitch, especially compared to close neighbours and bitter enemies Manchester United, Manchester City have a large loyal fanbase of supporters.
